How to Hang a Heavy Mirror Safely

By Pedro Rivera, founder, Austin Art Installation. Updated October 2026. Mirrors are heavier than they look and unforgiving if they fall. Here is how we approach them, using the same weight classes as our instant estimate.

Weight classes

  • Up to 50 lb: standard residential pricing.
  • 50 to 150 lb: a $75 heavy mirror fee, and usually a French cleat.
  • Over 150 lb: a custom quote after a paid site visit.

French cleats

A French cleat is a pair of interlocking angled rails — one on the wall, one on the mirror. It spreads the load across a wider area and helps keep the mirror level. French cleats are $20 each.

Studs vs anchors

Fastening into studs is the most secure option for heavy mirrors. Where studs are not in the right place, appropriately rated anchors can be used for moderate weights. We check the wall and choose the hardware before we drill.

Wall types

Drywall and plaster are handled as described in our hardware guide. Tile, stone, marble and brick need a site visit before we quote.

Why two people for large mirrors

Large mirrors are awkward to lift and hard to see past. A second person keeps the mirror steady while it is engaged on the cleat or hardware and reduces the risk of a slip. An extra installer is $150 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does it cost to hang a heavy mirror? Residential labor is $300 for the first 2 hours, then $150 per additional hour, plus a $25 anchor hardware kit. Mirrors 50–150 lb add a $75 heavy mirror fee, and French cleats are $20 each.
  • Do you hang mirrors over 150 lb? Yes, after a paid site visit and a custom quote.
  • Can a heavy mirror go on tile? Often, yes, but tile and stone need a site visit first.
