Picture Hanging Hardware by Wall Type: A Practical Guide for Austin

By Pedro Rivera, founder, Austin Art Installation. Updated October 2026. The right hardware depends on two things: how much the piece weighs and what the wall is made of. This guide explains the general rules we follow on every job, wall type by wall type. It is general guidance — every wall is different, and when in doubt we check before we drill.

Start with the weight

As a general rule for drywall:

  • Under 20 lb: a quality picture hook is usually enough.
  • 20 to 50 lb: toggle bolts, or screws into a stud.
  • Over 50 lb: a French cleat fastened into studs.

Drywall

Most Austin homes built in recent decades have drywall. Light frames hang well on picture hooks. Heavier pieces need toggle bolts or a stud, and heavy pieces need a French cleat on studs. We locate studs before choosing hardware so the piece ends up where you want it, not just where a stud happens to be.

Plaster

Older homes often have plaster over lath. Plaster can crack if it is nailed carelessly, so we drill pilot holes and use anchors suited to plaster, or fasten into the framing behind it for heavier pieces.

Brick, stone, marble, tile and concrete

Masonry and hard surfaces need masonry bits and anchors, and the right drilling location matters — for example, mortar joints versus the face of a brick, or avoiding the edge of a tile. Because every surface behaves differently, marble, stone, brick and tile work is quoted after a paid site visit rather than with an instant number. Concrete walls are assessed the same way when the piece is heavy.

How we install, on any wall

Our method is the same on every job:

  • A walkthrough first, to confirm placement, weights and wall type.
  • Laser leveling on everything.
  • Two points of contact per piece, so it stays level over time.
  • Heavy-duty anchors where the weight calls for them.
  • French cleats for heavy mirrors and large pieces.

What hardware costs

Residential jobs include a $25 anchor hardware kit as a separate line; French cleats are $20 each; commercial heavy-duty anchors are $5 each. The full rate card is on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I hang a heavy picture without finding a stud? For moderate weights on drywall, toggle bolts can work. For pieces over about 50 lb we recommend a French cleat fastened into studs.
  • Do you drill into brick or stone? Yes, with masonry bits and anchors. Brick, stone, marble and tile are quoted after a paid site visit so we can check the surface first.
  • Why two points of contact? A piece hung from a single point can tilt over time. Two points of contact keep it level.
  • Is hardware included in the price? Residential jobs include a $25 anchor hardware kit as a separate line. French cleats are $20 each. Commercial heavy-duty anchors are $5 each.
